Evaluation of European carrot genotypes including F1 hybrids for their root quality, yield and nutritive characters

Abstract

Twenty-seven genotypes including 14 open-pollinated varieties and 13 hybrids of European carrot alongwith two check varieties were evaluated for their growth, root quality and nutritional status along with yield. All the genotypes varied in qualitative traits and differed significantly for all the quantitative characters. The highest net marketable root weight/plot was observed in New Kuroda (F) followed by Nandrin (95 × N) × 1061, Improved Kuroda and (28×PY)×1060. The highest number of marketable roots/plot was observed in Hybrid No. 501 followed by (28×PY)×1060, New Karoda (F), CR-501 (Paras) and No. 44365. For net root weight/five plants, net marketable root weight/plot, Sumrai Hindustan and Chamman recorded multi-characters superiority to check (Pusa Yamdagni). Likewise, Sutton’s Early Nantes exhibited the highest contents for carotene, No. 44365 for moisture, CR-501 (Paras) for TSS, New Karoda (J) for reducing sugars and Sumrai Hindustan for total sugars.
