Abstract

An experiment was conducted to assess storage environment and packing method for the storage of garlic. Four storage structures and two packing methods were tried for storage of garlic from April to November during 2002–04. The results revealed that among the storage structures, lowest losses were found in garlic stored in top and bottom ventilated storage structure. While the heap storages was found better than the storage in hessian cloth bags. The visual quality and colour retention was higher in heaps. Among the various treatment combinations, lowest losses were recorded in heap storage in modified bottom ventilated storage structure (24.04%) and heap storage in top and bottom ventilated storage structure (24.95%). The highest net profit (Rs. 6214/t) was also in heap storage in modified bottom ventilated storage structure. But among the storage structures, net profit was highest in top and bottom ventilated storage structures.
