1. The economics of the cultivation of the papaya, the production of papain, and papaya fruit preservation have been studied under Saharanpur conditions, during the period 1949–52.
2. The estimated average profit per acre per year from papaya cultivation was:---
(a) Rs. 6,413, when papain was produced and the scarred fruit was sold as candied fruit;
(b) Rs. 3,021, when papain was produced, but the scarred fruit was sold as such; and
(c) Rs. 2,522, when papain was not produced, and the fruit was sold as fresh fruit.
3. It is concluded that papaya cultivation, coupled with the utilization of the fruit as a preserve, and the production of papain, has attractive prospects under present market conditions.
