Health Perception and Sense of Psychological Well-Being among Persons with Disabilities

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to explore the health awareness in terms of health perception of handicapped persons. The sample comprised 60 handicapped persons of village of Chirkiht Lalganj sub-division of Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh. Health awareness has been explored in terms of three dimension related to health, healthy person, illness and causes of illness. Besides their perceived health status, coping with illness and perceived correlates of the health were also explored. A perceived health schedule was used to measures the perceptions. Semantic of health 28.10% of the sample felt that health is important and necessary, where as for semantic of healthy person, 26.5% construed this as absence of sickness. Semantic of illness shows that 26% related to specific disease. Nutritious diet has emerged as an essential correlate of health.
