Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the emotional regulation strategies (Cognitive Reappraisal and Emotional Suppression) and emotional & behavioural problems (EBP) among institutionalised and non-institutionalised adolescents. 220 adolescents (n-110, institutionalised adolescents; n-110, non-institutionalized) were selected for the present study. Self-reported version of Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (Gross and John, 2003) and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman, 1997) was used as data collection tools. Independent t-test revealed significant group differences in emotional regulation strategies used by institutionalised adolescents. Institutionalised adolescents’ mean was significantly greater on emotional suppression as compared to their counterparts. In addition, adolescents staying in institutions were found to be high on emotional and behavioural problems (EBP) than adolescents staying with families. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical evidences and studies.
