Abstract

The present paper focuses on acts and policies which are made by India Government and States for conserving our environment is implemented by the people of our society in day to day life or failed to attain miserably. It has been attributed to the lack of awareness amongst masses about the problems and their dimensions created due to unwise and exploitative use of natural resources by the technological social order. The result has been the misuse and overuse of these resources. This clearly indicates the lack of awareness regarding these resources. Mahatma Gandhi told ‘Nature has enough for the needs of man but not for his greed ’. It appears that there is a need to mute Gandhian approach to our technological civilization. Legislation Pertaining to Environment: The importance of environment for the survival of human species was brought to the force at the Stockholm Conference held in June 1972. Government of India also took up the task of keeping the environment hospitable to man. The government brought 42nd Constitutional Amendment and inserted articles 48A and 51A(g) which states that "The state shall endeavour to protect and improve "the environment and to safeguard the forests and wildlife of the country. 51A(g)To protect and improve the natural environment" including forests, lakes, rivers, wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures.
