Abstract

Scrub typhus is a febrile zoonotic disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. They are obligate; intracellular Gram-negative coccobacilli transmitted by the arthropod vector. It is under diagnosed in India due to its varied and nonspecific clinical presentation, limited awareness and lack of diagnostic facilities. Due to difficulty in clinical diagnosis and lack of laboratory methods, public health importance of this disease is underestimated in many geographical areas. Drugs like doxycycline and tetracycline effectively treat scrub typhus. There are no vaccine is available for scrub typhus right now but vaccines using Sta47 and Sta56 antigens are under trial as a recombinant vaccine.
