The increasing popularity of alternative therapies reflects the changing needs and values in modern society in general. In addition, concern about the adverse effects and escalating costs of conventional health care are fueling the search for alternative approaches. Some alternative therapies that have been explored are discussed in this article. They include treatment modalities like Acupuncture, Acupressure, Homeopathy, Ayurveda and Hypnosis. However, the current status of alternative therapies recommends them as a supplement to conventional treatment. As a sole therapy, their value is questionable but in a combined approach with conventional treatment, they may be a valuable addition to the therapeutic armamentarium of the general dental practitioner.
