Abstract

Apical extrusion of debris during root canal preparation may potentially cause post-operative complications such as flare-up. The aim of this study is to compare the amount of debris extruded during root canal preparation using three single file rotary systems. Sixty single-rooted human mandibular premolar with single canal and apical foramen were selected and randomly divided into three groups (n=20) according to the instrumentation system to be used: group 1: WaveOne (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), group 2: One Shape (Micro-Mega, Besancon, France), group 3: Self Adjusting File (SAF; Re Dent Nova Ra'anana, Israel) system. Extrusion of debris during root canal preparation was collected and dried in preweighed Eppendorf tube using electronic microbalance. Three consecutive measurements of each tube were taken and average was recorded. Extrusion of debris was statistically analysed using Shapiro-Wilk, One-way ANOVA and Post-hoc Bonferroni test. The WaveOne group produced the highest amount of debris while OneShape produced least amount of debris compared with all groups. There was a statistically significant difference among the three groups (p<0.05). It was concluded that apically extruded debris was associated with all instrumentation techniques. The WaveOne extruded more debris as compared with OneShape and Self adjusting file.
