The current assessment of postgraduate students by a traditional end of term examination is a test of student's knowledge, rote learning with little assessment of their clinical competency and attitude. Mini-CEX offers a reliable measure of trainee's performance by observing a number of brief encounters over a period, with a number of different assessors and in different clinical settings.
Mini-CEX form of assessment was done for three second year (R2) and two third year (R3) post graduate students posted in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at PSMC, Karamsad. The students and faculty gave their valuable structured feedback for the Mini-CEX clinical evaluation exercise.
Total 20 Mini-CEX encounters were done over a period of four months. All residents and faculty enjoyed the process. All the consultants and residents had given the feedback that it is useful as a part of formative assessment. Most residents (3/5) felt that there is less stress in Mini-CEX, except two who had perceived more stress in Mini-CEX due to busy OPD.
Our Pilot study shows it is feasible to implement the Mini-CEX as a part of formative assessment. Further large trials including all departments are needed to establish the feasibility of Mini-CEX as a regular assessment tool for postgraduate students.
