Abstract

There are many studies in the recent literature concluding that intake of coffee after elective colonic anastomosis decreases postoperative ileus (POI). However, effect of hot tea, another popular beverage in the world, has not been much evaluated on POI after elective intestinal anastomosis. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of taking hot tea on the duration of POI following intestinal anastomosis.

Seventy patients undergoing elective intestinal anastomosis were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n=35) and the control group (n=35). The intervention group patients took hot tea twice a day starting 24 h after the surgery until the passage of first flatus. The control group patients were kept nil per mouth till passage of flatus as per standard protocol of postoperative management.

Intervention and control group patients were comparable at baseline. The mean time for the appearance of bowel sounds (51.20±24.73 hrs) as well as the passage of first flatus (64.91±28.52 hrs) was significantly shorter in the intervention group (P<0.05, P<0.05). The postoperative hospital stay was shorter in the intervention group, but the difference was not significant (P>0.05).

The intake of hot tea after surgery helps in early recovery by reducing the duration of postoperative ileus following elective intestinal anastomosis.
