The Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is an appaling presentation of COVID19 seen in pediatric age group. It may occur in children not having acute covid symptoms as a post covid complication as well. Typical manifestations include multi-organ dysfunction. The atypical presentations are myriad making its diagnosis challenging, which may cause undue delay in appropriate management leading to increased morbidity and mortality.
A 6 year old boy presented with fever and erythematous maculopapular rash mimicking measles infection, and later developed myocardial dysfunction, mucositis, non-suppurative conjunctivitis, cervical lymphadenopathy and desquamation, with elevated inflammatory markers and behindhand was diagnosed as MIS-C.
The child recovered with parenteral steroids, intravenous immunoglobulin along with supportive management.
This case report highlights the importance of considering the diagnosis of MIS-C in children presenting with atypical signs and symptoms so as to prevent undue delay in institution of appropriate therapy.
