Abstract

To assess the effect of breastfeeding and bottle-feeding practices on caries occurrence in mixed dentition period in children aged 6-8 years.

The current study was a cross sectional study conducted among schools in Delhi NCR region among 1000 children. Information regarding the duration of breast feeding, bottle feeding and dental history was collected using parental responses to a self-administered questionnaire. Caries occurrence was assessed using the Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) Index.

CAST scores of permanent molars in breastfeeding (2.35) as compared to bottle feeding (1.35), whereas scores in the primary dentition in breastfeeding group (6.74) compared to bottle feeding (6.69). Regarding dmft, breastfeeding group (4.89) compared to bottle feeding group (4.74). DMFT of permanent first molars in breastfeeding (0.25) compared to bottle feeding (0.11).

Feeding practices are essential as they provide nourishment to the child. Breastfeeding is the chosen modality for nourishment in most children as it has several benefits for both mother and child. In the current study population, effect of feeding practices on caries occurrence reduces in later years of life. Factors such as oral hygiene, snacking habits and fluoridated dentifrice play an important role in caries occurrence and progression.
