India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and, therefore, has a fast growing energy demand fuelled by a growing rate of industrialisation and urbanisation, India will require sufficient energy to maintain the pace of its economic development and to raise its economy to higher economic standards. Currently India's power sector fails to fulfil the demand, resulting in delay in the execution of developmental plans and, also, slow economic growth rate. The present paper makes an attempt to assess the likely power generation and supply to various sectors in India. To analyse the data various growth and substitution models have been applied. As past data in all the cases depict either linear or logistic growth patterns, these models have been used to extrapolate the trends. To study the relative growth patterns among hydroelectric, thermal and nuclear energy resources, substitution models recently proposed by Rat [1] have been applied These models capture various trends and provide a range of forecast to develop different scenarios. From the results obtained by using these models it is evident that energy generation and consumption patterns follow linear trends, whereas in the near future share of thermal and nuclear energy is likely to increase by a few percent.
