Abstract

In the recent past as well as in present a series of modern technology such as Bar-Coding, Electro-magnetic strips, etc have been used in the library and information centers (LICs) with the intention of improving the quality of service to the users. The RFID is the new offspring of the modern technology. The functionality and benefits offered by the RFID systems match the needs and areas of improvement for libraries. RFID technology can help streamline major library processes such as stocktaking, circulation and book searches. The RFID technology in libraries can thus eliminate significantly manual labour by optimizing the handling, processing and security of materials. In this paper an attempt has been made to outline the brief introduction of RFID, its components, usage, advantages and disadvantages.
