Universities are known as generators of knowledge, hence, thesis produced by these universities are of much importance at national or international level. India has one of the biggest higher educational systems in the world but unable to attract most of its young population in higher education stream. Lack or resources, less number of universities, social and gender issues are some of the important impediments, Indian government needs to address upon. In this chapter an attempt is being made to know trends of research in Indian universities with respect to production of number of PhDs. The analysis will also help to know trends, characteristics as well as the gray areas of research productivity where government can focus to streamline the mechanism.
