Abstract

Libraries are used to assign keywords using controlled vocabulary or classification schemes to describe the content of library resources. Many times these assigned keywords by librarians do not match with keywords used by readers in searching for information. It is necessary to allow users to assign tags or keywords to the documents they have read. Collaborative tagging allows users to tag the document. The present paper is an attempt to review trends in collaborative tagging among libraries in the digital world. An overview of use of Flicker, Delicious and Library Thing used by libraries for allowing user to participate by assigning tags is described. The trend of allowing user to assign tags to library resources is acceptable but it requires proper planning and control.
