A Study on Supply Chain Management in Indian Horticulture Sector: Issues and Challenges

Because of absence of efficient infrastructure and food processing industries about 30-35 percent of all food produced in India are wasted and changes in factors like information technology, competition, importance of speed and the human perspective has increased more significance of Supply Chain Management. For agricultural products, successful supply chain development projects reduce not only the transaction costs but also the institutional barriers that decouple individual links in traditional distribution channels. They allow participants to achieve higher levels of service and to capture substantial added value thereby serving as leverage points both for economic growth and for poverty alleviation. The entire supply chain of Fruits and Vegetables in India is laden with various issues and challenges. To list the possible challenges and suggest a way forward, there is a need to study the supply chain of Fruits and Vegetables sector in India. So the purpose of this paper is to discuss the supply chain of fruits and vegetables sector in India and explain the issues which are affecting it. This paper also suggests the corresponding mitigation strategies to overcome the identified issues and challenges. This paper discus the viable issues as far as the drivers of the supply chain performance, which are inventory, transportation, facility, information and price of the upstream elements, farmers, traders and mid stream of the supply chain.
