The electrical energy which is essential for day to operations of the hospital patient care especially emergency, intensive care units, operation theatres to that matter every area without which hospital can't operate1. Alternate power supply is essential in key areas with generators and UPS. Electrical energy costs around 20% of total expenditure of the overheads.
The review of literature and published articles on this subject was reviewed to understand the energy management programmes implemented in the hospitals. Case studies of hospitals were noted for energy saving strategies. Retrospective data was collected from the Electrical engineering department about the Electrical board (EB) consumption for the year and the quantity of electrical installations in the hospital which consume most of the energy has been analysed to measure the consumption pattern. The energy saving measures implemented and cost incurred have been obtained from the electrical department and finance section. The saving measures were analysed and results were concluded in terms of cost and power.1.
The studies on electrical consumption are due to A.C 45% Geysers 5%Lighting 15% Equipment 20% Others 15% of the total consumption in a hospital. Savings in lighting with conversion to LED lights, Power factor control from 0.97 to 0.99 by installing capacitors and installing 1 MW roof top solar plant on BOOT model with cost savings of Rs 6.5 lakh in lighting, Rs.13.00 lakh in power factor control and Rs 25.00 L per year by solar power usage.
Energy saving measures can reduce costs to about 10% with simple measures without any cost. Techno economic analysis by either in house or by experts shall be conducted followed by energy management programme with initial energy audit, followed by energy conservation measures, monitoring and feedback at regular intervals for continuous effectiveness of the programme. Return on investment (ROI) has to be kept in mind while planning and implementing the cost effective measures like No cost, low cost simple reconstruction measures with capital cost were to be evaluated. Top management commitment and support at all levels of staff, awareness and training are essential.
