Abstract

Lecturers are vitally important in grooming the future human resource in any society. Thus, welfare schemes are required in order to motivate them. However, the welfare packages in the universities keep changing as a result of different evolvements in the educational sector and the emergence of diverse views on the administration of the university system by stakeholders in the country. These changes in welfare packages are believed to impact on the university lecturers’ job commitment in varying degrees. However, there is a paucity of studies to substantiate this view; hence the study investigates the welfare packages that have the greatest influence on the lecturers’ job commitment and the relationship between lecturers’ welfare packages and job commitment in Osun State universities. The population for the study comprised of 1445 lectures in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Osun State University (UNISOUN). A sample of 400 respondents, comprising 300 lectures’ in OAU and 100 lecturers’ in UNIOSUN were selected using proportionate sampling technique based on the numerical staff strength. A self-constructed questionnaire tagged Welfare Packages and Lecturers’ Job Commitment Questionnaire (WPLJCQ) was used. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between lecturers’ welfare packages and job commitment in Osun State universities.
