Interception of seed-borne pathogens in introduced planting material

Abstract

Quarantine processing of 83,662 samples of introduced planting material during 2002 resulted in the interception of economically important fungal pathogens viz. Peronospora manshurica (Naum.) Syd. not known to occur in India; Puccinia helianthi Schw., having physiological races; Colletotrichum dematium (Pers. ex Fr.) Grove, C. gloeosporioides Penz., Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc., Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid., Drechslera sorokiniana (Sacc.) Subram. & Jain, D. graminea (Rebenh. Ex Schlecht.) Shoemaker, Phoma lingam Frank having wide host range; species of Alternaria- A. longipes (Ell. & Ev.) Mason, A. padwickii (Ganguly) M. B. Ellis, A. japonica Yoshii and a bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Pammel) Dowson, the black rot of crucifers. Economic significance of interceptions is analysed.
