Abstract

The dark maroon dye, extracted in methanol from the roots of Arnebia nobilis had remarkable antibacterial properties and could be used as natural colorant in syrups, tonics, ointments and hair dyes. Methanol extract and three pure isolated compounds from methanol extract were found inhibitory against Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. Maximum zone size of 15.6 mm was observed against Staphylococcus aureus in the case of pure isolated compound arnebin-2.
