Stereum ostrea, a white rot fungus collected from decaying wood, produced good amount of laccase in presence of malt and peptone in the nutrient medium. Substitution of peptone with diluted pulpmill effluent proved to be equally efficient. The fungus decolourized the effluent to 50%. The pulpmill effluent can be used to grow the fungus to serve the dual purpose of decolourization of the effluent and promote lignin biodegradation.
