The effect of synthetic auxins, 2,4-D (0.5 ppm), NAA (8 ppm) and IBA (8 ppm) with and without the inoculation of Azorhizobium caulinodans on nodulation and nitrogenase activity in rice was tested under hydroponic conditions using N-free Hoagland medium. Nodule like structures (para-nodules) were found on the rice roots treated with synthetic auxins irrespective of the presence or absence of the bacteria. Induction of nitrogenase activity was observed in all the inoculated treatments with enhanced activity in the treatments involving the combination of the auxin application and Azorhizobium inoculation. Seedlings with nodulated roots were transplanted to pots for studying the effect on growth and yield. Auxin treatment along with Azorhizobium caulinodans inoculation enhanced the growth and yield parameters.
