Abstract

Studies on poly-β-hydroxy butyrate (PHB) production, optimization and recovery by Alcaligenes faecalis revealed that the organism accumulated maximum amount of PHB in modified nitrogen deficient minimal medium. It was found to accumulate high amount of PHB during stationary phase. Starch, citric acid and ammonium sulfate resulted in maximum accumulation of PHB, while amino acids had no effect. Neutral or near neutral pH was optimum. Good recovery of yield was obtained with a newly developed solvent system. UV-visible spectrophotometric studies indicated the presence of two types of polymers, with absorption maxima of 336 nm and 258 nm.
