A microbial assay was developed for the detection of chloramphenicol residues in shrimp muscle using luminescent bacteria, Photobacterium spp. isolated from marine fish. The assay was performed by pad plate technique. About 38% isolates showed minimum detection level of 2 mg mL−1. Only one isolate (L-2) identified as Photobacterium leiognathi, showed minimum detection limit of 1 mg mL−1. Chloramphenicol spiked in shrimp muscle at concentration ranging from 2 to 100 mg mL−1 was extracted using ethyl acetate and ammonia and the recovery was found to be about 88%. The results showed that P. leiognathi (L-2) could be used to screen chloramphenicol residues in foods.
