Secretion of Ca2+-independent, hyperthermostable and high maltose-forming α-amylase by Geobacillus thermoleovorans in a chemically defined medium was enhanced in the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000, sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) and cholic acid. Triton X-100 and N-cetyl-N, N, N-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), however, decreased enzyme production. The differential effect of these compounds on enzyme secretion could be due to their varied influence on the modulation of cell membrane permeability.
