Abstract

Anaerobic consortium for degradation of night soil was subjected to five cycles of freeze/thaw treatment. The performance of inoculum sharply declined after first cycle of treatment with gradual decrease after subsequent cycles. The deleterious effect of freezing was most pronounced for methanogens and sulfate reducing bacteria.
