Five fungal species viz., Aspergillus niger, Monilia acremonium, Humicolafuscoatra, Penicillium notation and Trichoderma viride, isolated from paddy straw were evaluated for their ability to produce cellulolytic and lignolytic enzymes during solid state fermentation (SSF). A. niger, and H. fuscoatra, proved to be potential producers of enzyme involved in fermentation of lignocellulases. The treatment of paddy straw with 1% urea was useful in increasing the enzyme production. Maximum enzyme secretion was recorded for T. viride and A. niger in presence of urea. The amendment of paddy straw with calcium compounds showed moderate improvement in production of enzymes while magnesium sulf ate and nitrogen based compounds showed high enzyme activity
