Response of diazotrophic cyanobacteria to alternative sources of phosphorus

Abstract

The nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria Westiellopsis proliftca and Anabaena variabilis were examined for their response to Mussorie Rock Phosphate (MRP) and Tricalcium Phosphate (TCP) in terms of chlorophyll and soluble proteins content and AR activity. Both showed a concentration dependent increase in all the parameters in presence of these insoluble sources of P with Anabaena variabilis scoring over Westiellopsis prolifica. These algae solubilized MRP and TCP, not only to meet their growth requirement but also increased available P in the medium.
