Abstract

Six parent strains and 11 monosporous isolates from two strains of Volvariella volvacea were evaluated for their enzymes induction level, substrate colonization and yield potential. All parent strains preferred wild grass over wheat straw and paddy straw for vegetative growth along with highest level of induction of β-glucosidase and xylanase. Mushroom yield in parent strains was related to the level of various lingocellulolytic enzymes produced on a substrate. Six types of monosporous isolates were obtained from strain OE-12 and 4 types from strain OE-273, which varied in growth rate, type of growth and aerial mycelia and chlamydospore formation. Monosporous isolates and parent strains produced more cellulases at 8 and 10 d, while xylanase, laccase and polyphenol oxidase were more at 10 or 13 d growth on paddy straw. The isolate OE-1222 of parent strain OE-12 with higher level of all lignocellulolytic enzymes, particularly laccase during later stage of growth, gave significantly higher yield over its parent strain.
