Antibacterial and immunomodulatory studies of selected brown algae of Visakhapatnam seacoast

Abstract

Chloroform – methanol mixture, n-butanol and diethyl ether extracts of two marine brown algae from Bay of Bengal near Visakhapatnam sea coast were evaluated for antibacterial activity by agar-well diffusion assay. The diethyl ether and chloroform-methanol extracts of Sargassum vulgare and diethyl ether, chloroform-methanol and n-butanol extracts of Padina tetrastromatica exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The aqueous extract of Sargassum vulgare down regulated the total IgE levels raised against ovalbumin (OVA) and other food allergens tested in Balb/C mice.
