The frequency of resistance to antibiotics such as chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, nitrofurantoin, oxytetracycline and trimethoprim in luminous bacteria of penaeid shrimp farm environments was studied. The study identified the penaeid shrimp hatchery as a potential reservoir of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The luminous bacteria from shrimp farms and coastal water were highly sensitive to chloramphenicol whereas majority of the shrimp hatchery isolates were resistant. The high incidence of multiple antibiotic resistances among these bacteria from the shrimp farm may make the aquaculture effluents a concern for public health significance.
