Abstract

Quarantine processing of 2240 germplasm samples of Sesamum indicum (Sesame) into India during last three decades resulted in the interception of 12 pathogenic fungi of high economic significance. Among these, Alternaria longissima Deighton & MacGarvie, A. sesami (S. Kawam.) Mohanty & Behera, Cercospora sesami Zimmerm., Corynespora cassiicola (Berk. & Curtis) Wei, Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc. and Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. are seed-borne on S. indicum while other fungal pathogens like Cephalosporium sp., Colletotrichum acutatum Simmonds ex Simmonds, C. coffeanum Noack, Corticium rolfsii Curzi, Phomopsis sp. and Verticillium albo-atrum Reinke & Berthold do not have S. indicum as the host. Some of the intercepted fungi are known to have a very wide host range. Country-wise information on the interception of various fungi on germplasm introductions could also be developed.
