The antimicrobial activity of the extracts of Artemisia nilagirica, Achyranthes aspera, Amomum subulatum, Aristolochia indica and Andrographis paniculata against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria was studied in vitro. The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration of A. nilagirica leaf extract is 20mg/ml against E. coli. However, the minimum inhibitory concentration of A. aspera whole plant extract against S. aureus and B. subtilis are 30 µg/ml and 50 µg/ml respectively, Whereas that of A. subulatum seed extract is 40mg/ml against K. pneumoniae. The growth of all the microorganisms tested except E. coli is inhibited by A. indica root extract with MICs ranging from 20–100µg/ml.
