Abstract

Gastroenteritis in children is still a common reason for consulting a general practitioner and for hospital admission. Diarrhoea represents a major health problem in developing countries. Although the syndrome is usually self-limited and recovery occurs in the majority of cases without any specific form of therapy, there is a need for safe and effective ways of preventing and treating it. An improved management of diarrhoeal illness in children is a major accomplishment that can be attributed to the development and dissemination of Oral Rehydrating Solution (ORS). The World Health Organization (WHO) identified oral rehydration as the greatest life-saving advancement of the 20th century. Since the syndrome is most often caused by an infection acquired by ingesting fecally contaminated food or beverages, precautions regarding dietary habits remain the cornerstone of prophylaxis, but dietary self-restrictions do not always translate to reduced rates of diarrhoeal illness. Continual developments of resistant pathogens through antibiosis have created havoc. In an effort to prevent or treat these difficult cases of diarrhoea and to restablish the normal homeostasis of the colonic ecosystems, innovative approaches have been tried using living Biotherapeutic agents. These non-pathogenic microorganisms when ingested exert a positive influence on the health or physiology of the host. The aim of the present review is to explore the possibility of probiotic lactobacilli during Oral rehydration solution to break down vicious cycle of pathogens in the gut, which are responsible to cause diarrhoea and other G.I. disorders.
