Abstract

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours (GISTs) are mesenchymal tumours that originate from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. GISTs are thought to originate from the interstitial cell of Cajal, an intestinal pacemaker cell. GISTs are spindle cell, epithelioid or occasionally pleomorphic mesenchymal tumours of the GI tract that express the c-KIT protein. Imatinib Mesylate has recently emerged as potent therapeutic option for this tumour that was resistant to all known chemotherapeutic drugs.
