Friction and Wear of Al6061 Containg 10wt.% Sic Metal Matrix Composites

Abstract

The progress and developments in the materials technology have resulted in several new materials like metal matrix composites designed to suit specific requirement. Metal Matrix Composites possess the combined properties of metals as well as the ceramics. The wear behavior of SiCp(Silicon Carbide particulates)-reinforced aluminium composite produced by the liquid metallurgy technique was investigated by means of a pin-on-disc type wear rig. A pin on disc type apparatus was employed for determining the sliding wear rate and the coefficient of friction. The applied load is varied in the range of 10–40 N and sliding velocity is varied in the range of 1–4 m/s. Moreover, the wear rate increased with increasing applied load and speed. The interaction effect of the variables exhibited a mixed behaviour towards the wear of the materials.
