Abstract

Cryogenic treatment has been identified to enhance the properties of Tools steels. Cryogenic treatment can improve the tool life and eliminate early damage of tools. Cryogenic treatment results in a complete transformation of retained austenite to martensite with some additional formation of fine-carbide particles. The tool steel T1 (AISI) is selected for the study and experimentally investigated for improvement in wear resistance, improvement in specific wear resistance and enhancement of tool life after cold treatment (233K & 193K) as well as cryogenic treatment (123K & 83K) by Pin-on-Disk method. The results are compared with normal treatment and it is found that cryogenic treatment at 123K improves equivalent wear resistance of 83K cryogenic treatment.
