Abstract

On the basis of economic and lower density considerations, Fe-Al-C alloy could be a good candidate for new design concepts for the construction of advanced lightweight ground transportation systems. Aluminum is used to replace the expensive alloying elements in conventional Fe-Cr-Ni system. The aim of the research is to investigate microstructure and mechanical properties of the as cast Fe-xAl-0.6C alloys. The alloys were prepared by an induction furnace under a controlled protective argon atmosphere. The alloys were examined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and XRD to understand the microstructure of these alloys. The as cast Fe-xAl-0.6C alloys containing 1.24, 3.3, and 5.5 wt-% Al showed the presence of double phase ferrite and pearlite. Increasing Al content of these alloys resulted in decreasing tensile strength, elongation and density significantly. but and hardness properties, but an increase in Al content from 1.24 to 5.5 wt-% in as cast Fe-xAl-0.6C alloys has no significant influence to the impact toughness at room temperature down to −30°C. The surface of impact fracture showed brittle fracture pattern.
