Abstract

Public lighting system in streets and highways provide the safety and connectivity to the public. This type of lighting system consumes around 2.3% in global electricity consumption. Sodium Vapour Lamps (SVL), Conventional Tube Lights (CTL) and Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) are the sources normally being used. They consume huge amount of power which not only creates scarce for electricity but also pollutes the environment in the form of heat and carbon emission. This consumption is reduced by a newly designed and fabricated Light Emitting Diode (LED) based lighting fixture. The limitations of using LEDs are taken into account during designing and fabrication of lighting fixture. The consumption and output luminous intensity of this LED source are compared with other sources of light.
