Abstract

The SmCo5/Fe65Co35/SmCo5 trilayer spring exchange magnets have been fabricated by dc magnetron sputtering on MgO(110) substrate with 20nm Cr buffer layer. The base pressure of sputtering chamber was kept in 10−7 Torr range and Ar pressure was 3 to 8 mTorr. The samples were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction and by SQUID magnetometer. The XRD graph shows epitaxial growth of Cr on MgO (110) substrate. It also reveals the presence of SmCo5, FeCo, Cr and an additional peak of Fe. The SQUID loop shows strong exchange coupling and single phase behaviour of composite magnets with saturation magnetization 1300 kA/m, remanance 600 kA/m and (BH)max value 18 kJ/m3.
