Abstract

This exploratory study examines the influence of job requirements on the role of academic middle managers (AMMs) in the planning and implementation of curriculum change in private higher education institutions (PHEIs). Literature shows that being able to satisfy the basic requirements for occupying and performing the role of AMM is viewed as very critical to the success of curriculum change in higher education institutions in general and PHEIs in particular. Results of the study showed that AMMs in PHEIs failed to satisfy the basic requirements of their roles which included having received adequate training, having authority over department matters and having been given detailed job descriptions at the start of their roles. This situation affected their ability to effectively perform their role of planning and implementing curriculum change in their departments.
