In the recent times, it has become critical for shipping companies to gauge the engagement level of their employees and analyze the impact of the job and personal resources in order to capitalize on the human assets of the company. This paper aims at determining what and how job-related and personal resources are associated with work engagement of employees working in the shipping industry. Data collected from 250 marine employees was analyzed which revealed strong relationships among job resources, personal resources and work engagement. Personal resources explained greater variance in work engagement than job resources implying that jobs in the shipping industry require employees to have greater personal resources to manage stress related to their jobs and be psychologically more engaged in their work. The present study illuminates the existing theoretical foundations regarding work engagement in the Indian shipping industry and this can help practitioners to take robust managerial decisions.
