Abstract

This study involves examining of contraceptive prevalence rate and option of sterilization in EAG states of India. We shall see that by far the number of scenario has improved along the timeline of NFHS. The goal is to analyze the prevalence of the modern contraceptive methods in three rounds of NFHS.

The survey had been conducted in three rounds: 1992–93, 1998–99 and 2005–06. Bivariate analysis and multilevel binomial logistic regression has been used to predict the prevalence with respect to sociodemographic characteristics. The analysis is being carried using STATA and allotting weights using SVY command. Various graphical representations using GIS have been done to assess the current modern contraceptive methods in use with respect to the dependent variables.

In NFHS-1 the prevalence rate of any modern method of contraception was 30.63% which increased to 37.1% in NFHS-2 and to 41.176% in NFHS-3. Prevalence of any modern contraceptive method was higher among women with secondary and higher education and was low for women with primary education or no education. Modern contraceptive method use was also more prevalent in Hindu women, belonging to other social groups and who lived in rural part of the city.

GIS shows that Madhya Pradesh has highest CPR, highest number of women who opted for sterilization and were least likely to face unmet need. Bihar and Jharkhand has the poorest of the situation in all three scenarios. Rajasthan, Orrisa, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have shown improvements along the NFHS timeline.
