Role of Educators in Teaching Ethical Values and Morality in Higher Education Systems-Indian Ethos of Management

The educators have the prime responsibility of educating the youth of a nation about the thinking, language and actions of the people, of their nation, and other nations across the world. They should promote the traditional values and morality in the sub culture of the nations. This will strengthen the youth of the world and the world itself. Even though the societies differ on certain grounds about what is right or wrong, but all societies teach the same basic values. The Universal human value common in all cultures should be educated to all nations giving due regards to particular values of each society. ‘Peace’ is an important part of the traditional value system of almost all cultures although some countries have been entering into conflicts and wars. India with a rich religious tradition of ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence) is a powerful influence that holds the nation together despite huge diversity and social problems. The role of education systems is important because they teach values to young people of diverse background. The significance of ethical values within the Indian higher education and society is declining and requires a new approach-i.e. based on Indian ethos. Universities and Colleges are the custodians of knowledge. The role of these Institutions is to create and disseminate knowledge within a particular society which are also the gateway to power, significantly affecting the quality of economic and social life throughout the world. They have moral responsibilities to maintain the well being of that society. In majority of the education institutions, there is a significant lapse on the concept of human development and nation building process, which has resulted in the decline of values among students. It is therefore, required to identify the major causes of this decline in ethical values i.e. corruption, bribery, murder, rape, scams etc, which can be addressed by imparting value based ethical education incorporated in the academic curriculum, just the way it was being practiced in the ancient times where the education system was value-based and education would help in the improvement of human character and recognition of their inner purity. This paper goes on to emphasize the importance of understanding the roles of ancient Indian values and ethos and in turn, their role to shape students, educational institutions, and today's society, and therefore, provides the direction and future goals of Indian higher education.
