Abstract

Prediction of student academic performance has long been regarded as an important research topic in many academic disciplines because it benefits both teaching and learning (Holland and Nichols, 1964, Ting, S. R, 2001). The study was carried to determine the four independent variables predicting the academic performance of secondary school students in Shiggaon taluk,. Haveri District, Karnataka during September to November 2014.

The purpose of this study to examine the influence of factors on academic performance of students by utilizing the applications of multiple linear regression analysis. A total of 300 secondary school students and 60 teachers were selected from a 30 secondary schools by a simple random sampling procedure. The data were collected on four validated scales that are study habits of students, organizational climate, teaching effectiveness and job satisfaction of teachers of secondary schools through direct personal interview method. The influences of four independent variables on academic performance of students were established by multiple linear regressions modeling.

The significant and positive correlation was observed between academic performance of students and study habits. Multiple linear regression model fitted significantly to the academic performance of students.
