News Framing: Indian Press Coverage of the FTII Students 139 Days Strike

Abstract

The present study is a content analysis of FTII Students 139 days strike. FTII students are protesting against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the hallowed institute for ‘lacking vision and artistic credentials ’. Gajendra, best known for playing Yudhisthira in the epic TV drama Mahabharata, has acted mostly in B-grade movies since then. Students allege that he lacks the qualification required to head an institute of FTII's stature. A total of 361 news stories were analyzed to examine which of 3 news frames (positive, negative, neutral). This article also discusses the background of the FTII strike, and Safranisation in Educational Institutions in India in the NDA government. The study found that media given better coverage to this issue.
