Indian economy, which grew at 7.6 percent for the fiscal 2015–16, reinforced its position as World's fastest growing economy, exceeding China, has come a long way from red tapism to undertaking initiatives for ease of doing business, recently. World Bank, in its latest report of Ease of Doing Business Index, 2016 ranked India at 130 out of 189 countries, which has been an improvement by 4 ranks from 2015. However, performance of Indian economy on this index has been moderate, with some of its sub index showing improvement, while others remaining the same. For instance, ranking in starting a business improved from 164 in 2015 to 155 in 2016. However, a lot of scope still remains for India to learn from the best country practices. This study analyses one of the major themes of ease of doing business index namely, dealing with construction permits in which India ranks 183 out of 189 nations. The aim of this study is to compare Indian practices in this category, with the World best practices and device some policy recommendations for India, in the same.
