Abstract

The fisheries sector in India being one of the most important, productive and developing sector, contributes much more to the Indian economy by the way of employment and income. The aquatic biodiversity and fish wealth sustain fisher folk and supports numerous additional activities including commercial fishing, aquaculture, marketing, value addition and recreation. The extent of inland water resources of the country has high potential for expanding aquaculture entrepreneurship and thus improving the social status of the fisher folk. This paper aims to unveil the prospects of social entrepreneurship in fisheries for future research purposes. This paper is organized as follows. The study made an attempt to furnish the concept of social entrepreneurship and also explored the possibility of incubation units working for fisheries by utilizing the vast research and development facilities and knowledge available with its research institutions. In particular, a model was developed for prospecting social entrepreneurship in fisheries that could define the future of social entrepreneurship as an area of research in fisheries.
